# The Inherited Ember Hypothesis — MOSAIC-EMBER v0.5

## The Problem

Earth radiates 44-47 TW of heat from its surface. Standard radiogenic decay (uranium, thorium, potassium) accounts for only 20-25 TW. This leaves 15-20 TW unexplained — the "missing heat" problem.

## The Hypothesis

During the late stages of solar system formation, a rogue body of approximately brown-dwarf mass (~13-80 Jupiter masses) collided with the proto-Earth. This was not Theia (the Moon-forming impactor) — it was a much larger, earlier event.

The impactor delivered:
1. Massive gravitational kinetic energy (~10^36 J)
2. Primordial deuterium preserved in its cold interior

The deuterium triggered a brief D-D fusion pulse in the superheated collision zone, adding ~10^33 J of nuclear energy on top of the gravitational energy. The combined thermal injection superheated the proto-core to temperatures far exceeding standard accretion models.

Earth has been cooling from this inherited thermal legacy ever since.

## Key Evidence

### The Heat Budget Gap
Standard models: 20-25 TW from radiogenic decay
Observed surface heat flow: 44-47 TW
Gap: 15-20 TW (this is what MOSAIC-EMBER explains)

### The Deuterium Solution
- D-D fusion produces NO electron antineutrinos
- KamLAND and Borexino geoneutrino detectors are completely blind to D-D processes
- The 2.4 TW geoneutrino constraint applies only to uranium/thorium fission, not deuterium fusion
- A Jupiter-mass rogue body carries 1-1.6 million times more deuterium than needed

### The Venus Control Case
Venus has:
- No global magnetic field
- No plate tectonics
- Catastrophic resurfacing (~500 Mya)
- Surface temperature driven entirely by atmospheric greenhouse

This is exactly what a standard-formation world (no ember) should look like.

### Mars as Additional Control
Mars shows:
- Dead magnetic field (ceased ~4 Gya)
- No current volcanism
- Rapid cooling consistent with small body, no ember

## Falsification Ladder (How to Kill This Theory)

1. Core temperature measurement: If Earth's inner core is < 4,500 K, the thermal reservoir is too small
2. Geoneutrino mapping: If future detectors find radiogenic sources accounting for > 40 TW, no gap exists
3. Deuterium isotope search: If zero anomalous D/H ratios exist in deep mantle samples, no fusion occurred
4. Venus interior probe: If Venus has comparable internal heat to Earth, the ember distinction fails
5. Computational modeling: If no impact parameter space produces the required thermal injection, the mechanism is impossible

## Confirmation Ladder (How to Strengthen It)

1. Deep mantle D/H anomalies above solar nebula baseline
2. Helium-3 excess in ocean ridge basalts (D-D fusion produces He-3)
3. Tungsten-182 anomalies in deep mantle (impactor signature)
4. Computational models showing viable impact parameters
5. Venus interior measurement showing < 5 TW total heat flow
