When no one checks which slit each particle goes through, they build up an interference pattern on the detection screen — the signature of a wave passing through both slits simultaneously. But the moment you place a detector at either slit to observe which path the particle takes, the interference pattern vanishes. You get two simple bands — the signature of particles going through one slit or the other. This is not a thought experiment. When you turn the detector ON, the wave function collapses and stays collapsed — particles behave as particles for as long as you watch.
